Upcoming Book

I’m going to be taking the next couple weeks off from writing on the blog. I’ll still be updating the site 1-2 times a week with some video blogs I recorded a while back as well as a new podcast next week.

The reason for the hiatus is that I’ve begun writing a new book. The book is based on my idea of “self help from a first-person perspective.” I.e., rather than lecturing you or explaining how you should live your life, it’s instead an honest inquiry into my own life, my own shortcomings, fears, challenges. The focus won’t be on my successes as much as overcoming my failures and coping with my fears. It will be divided into 12 separate short autobiographical stories, each with its own theme and revelation. I don’t think I’m far off in saying I’ve lived a bit of an extreme life, so hopefully the stories will be quite entertaining as well.

Subjects will include:

  • How I started a business and achieved a location-independent income.
  • Overcoming sexual inhibitions and becoming comfortable asserting myself around others.
  • The emotional extremes and confusion of living abroad.
  • Struggling with sexual objectification and obsession.
  • Making myself more emotionally vulnerable and the fear of opening myself up in my relationships with others.
  • Finally, the full story on Pick Up Jesus (for long-time blog readers).
  • Dealing with unconscious stereotypes, both as the culprit and the victim.
  • Learning to let go of what one doesn’t control and becoming comfortable with one’s shortcomings and failures.

More info will be provided between now and then. I am going to send out some feelers for agents and publishers to see if there’s any interest in doing a big mainstream publication. The blog receives a steady 300k visitors per month now and the message is a unique one that I think has wide mainstream appeal. If I do get scooped up by a publisher (which is a very big “if”), then it may be a year before the book comes out. If not, then I will self-publish again and promote it through this site as well as the usual channels.

I’ll be back in a few weeks. In the meantime, enjoy the videos, enjoy the podcasts, and feel free to make fun of my goofy laugh.

Can’t wait, Mark. Sad about the blog hiatus, though.

  3. Jack says:

OMG this is going to be the best book since Enders Game.

    • Zac says:

Have you read all the other books in the Ender’s universe? They are all my favorite books of all time.

      • Jack says:

not all but most of them, I really like the “Beans Game” (not the offical name I know) series as well.

As a random aside, I was playing sc2 with my handle “Ender” the other day (although I play sc2 the way Ender would play if he was simultaneously playing the violin and writing a magnum opus)

and this dude just said “we better not lose or I’ll tell Peter” out of the blue……I wasn’t even talking to him…..I’m like wtf? and then I was like OOOOOOHHHHH :-) 😀

        • Nick says:

Ender’s Game is easily the best book ever written. Wish he would write a Graff series…

          • Zac says:

I think I’ve read almost every book in the Ender Universe, some twice, Enders Game and Ender’s Shadow at least 4 times. I recently read Ender in Exhile and it was amazing. I’m definitely missing one or two. I’m glad to see some fellow Ender nerds… A Graff series would be epic. I’d like to see a Valentine series as well. I know we hear from her in some of the books but I feel like she could drop some knowledge.

I was wondering what you could possibly write to top Models, but I get it now. I can’t wait.

  5. Chaos says:

“Finally, the full story on Pick Up Jesus”. Didn’t we say all we wanted to say in the Bible? Is it really necessary to disclose confidential information about the First Bro? … I don’t know man, I don’t see it…

  6. Patrick says:

Dude, I’m impressed. You can write a book in two weeks? Sometimes it takes me that long to write a blog post!

    This comment took 4 days… 😉

  7. Aaron says:

*super anticipating the new book, especially the part on Pick Up Jesus 😀

  8. Alex says:

I’d buy it for quality content in this field alone:

“Making myself more emotionally vulnerable and the fear of opening myself up in my relationships with others.”

  9. just*us says:

  10. Mike says:

  11. Gary says:

Looking forward to it Mark, I enjoyed Models a lot, was probably the only book that “understood” me, and I’m sure this will be a great read as well.

    – The emotional extremes and confusion of living abroad.
    – Struggling with sexual objectification and obsession.
    – Dealing with unconscious stereotypes, both as the culprit and the victim.

THESE. These are the reasons I read your site, and what I love reading. I enjoy that they go deeper than the obvious surface level and challenge cultural “common sense.”

  13. Nick says:

I’m looking forward to this but right now, I am interested in what blog posts you are referring to in Pick Up Jesus.
