Most reviewers make broad positive statements to bookend otherwise negative reviews of books. It makes them appear more impartial to the eyes of a time-pressed copyeditor. You see this technique used all the time in academic journals like the American Historical Review.
In this case, I wouldn't characterize Sleazy's review as totally "negative", but it's worth noting that he gives specific examples for his "negative" points while not giving specific examples when praising the book.
Guess pickup is no different...
