Has anyone tried this? I'm seriously tempted with the idea of doing this. The fact is that virtually all of my friends invite me through the phone or call me up.
There is perhaps the possibility of a girl that you won't be able to chat up on facebook, but I still think that those events are way to random.
your experience?
I deleted my FB account 1.5 year ago. Later I restored it, because I was making a Facebook app. After the app turned out to be a failure, I deleted it again and now I am living without facebook for a year.
I watched this South Park episode focused entirely around how crazy Facebook is and felt inspired, so I deleted my account. Or so I thought. A little bit of digging reveals that you quite literally can't delete your account. The best that you can do is disable it.
Once your information is up there on the land of Facebook, it's there for keeps. Yay.
Tried it a long time ago. You know what? It doesn't work. All you can do is deactivate it, and everytime you log in by mistake, like using some other site that offers facebook log-in the darn thing starts up again. I can't wait for the majority to realise how bad facebook really is it and drop it like a hot potato. I'm all for social networking but facebook...the interface and privacy is just poor, there's much better out there.
1/ Go through your entire friends list and remove them all. Ditto, with groups and anything else tied to your account.
2/ Delete all your information or edit it to something useless
3/ Change your email address to a throwaway email address
4/ Copy paste random text as your new password, keep the password in your clipboard as you might need it for step 5.
5/ Disable account and copy some other text to your clipboard.
You can now never access your disabled account again, even if you want to. I've forced myself to quit many online games by using just steps 3 and 4.
You can delete your account. The disable option is much more visible, but you can also delete permanently your account. Google it or search in Facebook help. You will still need a week for them to delete the account (so maybe you will crack).

Why would you delete it??
I don't use fb, but it's handy to check once in a while to see what your friends are up to.

Facebook can be very addictive. It can come in handy on occasion, but if you are an active facebooker, you'll find yourself wasting a lot of time on there.
I don't personally have a facebook problem, but I did have a problem with webgames. They are designed to suck you in and keep you clicking. It can be a very addictive experience and before long, you're spending half the day or more grinding a shitty little text-rpg.
For me, the easiest solution in the long run was to just remove myself from being able to access my account.
You could also install something like chrome nanny on Google Chrome and set the timer for X minutes allowed per day, or only allowed on certain days (potentially block it Monday through Thursday, with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday being free days).
I'd recommend it. I personally installed chrome nanny and set the time limit on both twitter and facebook for half an hour. this means if I spend twenty minutes on twitter and ten on facebook, it gets blocked until midnight. Of course, I'll usually just open it, check my notifications or mentions, and then close it. But this is a lot better than mindlessly scrolling through facebook/twitter for an hour. I get a lot more done this way, and actually am keeping it up for the summer.
wow you can't delete it? Yeah facebook is a serious money-making machine.
The reason I wanted to delete it is because I hardly use and it I find it to be so superficial. Seriously if you want to meet up with anybody, just call or ask them in person. That's far more human to me.
I'm also limiting the time I spent on the net. Yesterday I surfed for 15 minutes or so. I just place my laptop in a closet in another room and it works great, since it's not immediately available.
@Thatcatch that seems like a great option as well.

LOL-I used to be the other way. I spent years preaching to anyone that would listen that FB was evil.
Well, I just got a date from it, so I'm pretty happy with the thing at the moment. FB FTW!
I don't see a reason to completely delete your facebook. I had problems spending too much time on there... so I completely blocked it on my computer, and downloaded Adium so I could just use the chat without the news feed, as that's all I want.
It's good for keeping in touch with people.
