Yeah, I'm just so awkward doing that. I can't really do it naturally, probably because of a lack of practice.

Another update:

My ex-girlfriend contacted me the other night, asking if I would like to stay in touch with her.
I still care about her a lot, but at the same time this is the reason why I don't want to be just her friend, hanging around until she gets in a new relationship and then deal with that situation.

So I told her more or less: I wish you all the happiness you deserve [and I really do], but no, I don't want to be your go-to guy until you fall in love again. Please respect that.

She got pretty pissed and tried to guilt me into giving in, but for once I held firm.

So now I'm actually quiet proud that for once I wasn't the Nice Guy, didn't avoid the conflict and did respect my own boundaries.
At the same time I feel a bit guilty about leaving her to herself...but in the end I'm pretty sure I did the right thing. No, actually I know I did the right thing, it's just my Nice Guy conditioning that is giving me a hard time about it.
