Thinking about joining some meetup groups.
So I have been thinking about joining some meetup groups in order to increase my social circle and to meet more women.

Anyone ever done this before and is this a good idea?

my friend did one of those casual sports leagues and met a lot of people out of it. That always seems like a good option.

RE: Thinking about joining some meetup groups.
I've found meet-up groups to be a great way to get introduced to and develop new hobbies and interests. That is mainly why I would recommend them.

If I were to find a cute girl in the group, I'd obviously approach and talk to her. But even if you don't meet women, the groups are a great exploratory tool.

Activity-based groups are the best (culinary, sports, photography, hiking, reading, improv, meditation etc.)

I'd personally caution against the Singles groups - they're like doing pick-up at the DMV.

I have registered for a couple of meetup groups for my hobbies that include the sciences and travel. It gets me out the house to meet and chat with other like minded people.

Well, what are your interests? Anything that gets your out of the house and making new friends is a good idea.

RE: Thinking about joining some meetup groups.
Casual sports are a good idea, I've made a ton of friends from these leagues. How social it is depends on the sport and level of competition - I know almost no one who's joining a basketball league or boxing gym to make friends, and even things like softball or soccer can get really competitive. But there's more casual leagues for that, and then there's plenty of straight up social leagues for things like kickball or dodgeball where people are pretty much out there to get fucked up and make friends. At the very least though, you're getting out the house and exercising for something other than looking pretty at the gym.

I've had bad luck with Meetup groups personally - I always end up going to those things and end up going "Why am I here? I can already do this myself" - but that's probably just me. It'll get you out of the house and probably open up some doors for you though, so why not?

Is meetup group a general description for people who meet for a certain purpose, or is it a special organization or website or something?

Excuse the question, but I've never heard of that here in Germany.
