Objectives at the gym
Didn't know where to post this... so I posted it here. Mods, please move it if it's not in the appropriate place.

I used to go to the gym, went for like 4 years, with pauses. It rocks. Anyway, how do you set your objectives? Some girls don't like 6packs, others adore them. Plus, they're pretty hard to make. Is it worth the effort?

Also... you have many options in the gym...getting big, getting really fiber-ish. Some girls like pecs, others hate them.

I've seen cases with men going to the gym with disastrous effects. You might have witnessed the same.

What should be the purpose of gym? When I started going I thought some of the guys in the posters were cool-looking. Now I consider them monkey-looking.

Is there a model we should follow? A specific look we should aim for?

The first rule about setting objectives is not to do it because it might please someone else.

I agree with Zac, what's the look that YOU like? I decided a long time ago I'd like to be really cut because in small people (like me) getting really big is horrible. Anyway that's my personal taste and I don't give a damn what girls think. I listen to my friends advice though, since I know they want the best for me... not blindly but if one of then says "you're getting too big" I trust him and go for more cardio.

RE: Objectives at the gym
Well, what's good for you? Do you find it easy to pack on muscle or are you more of a hardgainer? Are you looking for muscles to show off on the beach or a slim build that's good for more fashionable looks (mmm slim fit suits)? Or hell - are you looking to improve performance in a sport? There's enough girls out there that dig all the body types, and if you're in shape it's unlikely you'll turn anyone off.

That said , my personal favourite body type is the rockclimber. God DAMN.

Snowboarders aren't bad either.

I've never had a better body than when I climbed for a year.

Lean and muscular. To be honest, I have no goal at the gym except keeping on pushing my boundaries with weightlifting. That means I'll try to push up the weight all the time. Any side effects (Weight loss, muscle growth) are sort of a bonus. It's about challenging and pushing myself.

RE: Objectives at the gym
There is a study that shows which athletes/forms of sport are the most attractive to women. (See 59 seconds to change your life for more details.) Guess what. Climbing rocks! I don't know why. Probably a psychological thing: climbers are brave and overcome challenges in the most metaphorical way. But then again, I suppose rock climbers have good frames and, of course, very good back muscles.

RE: Objectives at the gym
Most rock climbers I know are secretly very strong without being overtly muscular. Lean, strong, healthy and with great core strength. I remember this climbing girl I used to date with a lot of fondness, what a body!

Isn't the rock climber the same type as the swimmer? I remember that study. Here is the full quote from the book:
    SEX AND SPORTS

When attempting to impress women, men often make a special effort to present themselves as especially caring and altruistic creatures. However, research suggests that they may have it all wrong.18 When women were asked to indicate the traits that they found most desirable in friends, short-term partners, and long-term partners, most placed kindness high on their shopping list. However, each and every time it was trumped by bravery. It seems that when it comes to love, women value courage and a willingness to take risks over kindness and altruism. So instead of men making a special effort to woo women by describing their tireless work for charity, they should perhaps consider mentioning their love of skydiving, the importance of standing up for what you think is right, and following your heart no matter where it leads.

This bravery effect emerged in an online survey that I conducted with fitness expert Sam Murphy to explore the relationship between sport and attraction. Are men more impressed by women who play soccer or climb mountains? Do women go for bodybuilders or yoga fanatics?

More than six thousand people reported which sporting activities would make a member of the opposite sex more attractive. Results revealed that 57 percent of women found climbing attractive, making it the sexiest sport from a female perspective. This was closely followed by extreme sports (56 percent), soccer (52 percent), and hiking (51 percent). At the bottom of the list came aerobics and golf, with just 9 percent and 13 percent of the vote, respectively.

In contrast, men were most attracted to women who did aerobics (70 percent), followed by those who took yoga (65 percent), and those who went to the gym (64 percent). At the bottom of their list came golf (18 percent), rugby (6 percent), and bodybuilding (5 percent).

Women’s choices appeared to reflect the type of psychological qualities that they find attractive, such as bravery and a willingness to take on challenges, while men appeared to be looking for a woman who was physically fit without appearing muscle-bound. No one, it seemed, was attracted to golfers.

Here's Wiseman's take: http://www.quirkology.com/UK/Experiment_sport.shtml
Apparently yoga is not that appealing for the ladies Sad

RE: Objectives at the gym
That is not about the sport but the people the women imagine performing the sport.

If chill young people who smoked pot and had stylish clothes played golf instead of snowboarding in our culture, then golf would be hot. Because the survey would have a check box that says "golf" and then they'd imagine a cool young guy, who is stylish and a bit of a rebel, out on the golf course. But instead they picture a 50 year old businessman with hypertension because that's who they associate with golf today.

Learn whatever sport you want. Golf has tonnes of benefits, especially in making connections with important people.

I've fought professional Muay Thai and nobody has found it particularly attractive. In Thailand it is looked down upon more than you would believe (because it is associated with the poor classes). It all has to do with the culture.
