I'll just add: this picture is not particularly rare or eventful. I spent two weeks in Israel and saw situations like this probably a dozen times. People with rifles and machine guns everywhere.

Military service sucks period. At least in israel they do it for a legit security reason. What I'm saying is it's better to be having to do mandatory draft when there's a conceivable reason to be doing it as opposed to some lame tradition.

90% of all time you spend in the military is standing around waiting for something or someone.

Also the people who design combat fatigues are clueless, why can't they make cute ones, at least for the girls. I'm not questioning camo pattern but the baggy cuts aren't doing it for me.

Also worth mentioning - when you are on leave you take your uniform and rifle home with you, so there are a lot of off duty soldiers on their way home with their rifles and uniforms acting pretty relaxed.

Just go to the beach in Tel Aviv and try and tell me otherwise.

The people are assholes, but that is only if they do not know you.

And they are usually friendly to tourists.
