Hair products
Hey guys,

so i've been reading the style guide and i'm guilty of one of the points they advice to avoid: Plastering your hair with gel.

Even tough i don't over do it, i use it nearly every day. What are your thoughts about this?

Would be really glad for some advice on this, what products should one use in order to get goodlooking hair?

Unless you have a specific style you're going for, you shouldn't need to use gel every day. Just when you want to change it from how you usually wear it. Getting it cut in a fashionable style and then having it cut regularly is the best way to keep it looking good.

As for gel, that depends on what kind of hair you have, and how much you're looking to change it. Google this, but generally finer hair needs lighter gel, probably more liquid, whereas thicker hair will need a heavier gel like a paste. I use a very thick strong one. Also, always rub it in on your palms before applying, to avoid using too much.

Personally I go for Fudge, but I think American Crew make great products and would recommend them too.

Like Tim said, a lot of it depends on your hair and your style. I used to gel up pretty hard, but then again back in the day I looked really Dragonball Z, and what else could you do? I have pretty thick (Asian) hair, I usually go with some fiber (usually American Crew but cheaper stuff will do, usually) and then a bit of wax for extra texture, but that's just me.

Really, having someone you can really trust with your hair (and maintaining it regularly) makes a world of difference. Hard to really tell or give any specific advice without seeing your face and your style, what works for one person will totally not work for someone with a different facial structure.

RE: Hair products
I used gel for a long time in the past. I absolutely hate it nowadays because it looks unnatural and dirty.

Depending on your kind of hair you might either

- Don't use any (if your cut and natural hair grow conforms a good style). I usually don't recommend this unless you know what you're doing.

- Use wax. This is what I do because my natural grow is a crest (seriously), It gives you a natural result and has the same fixation as gel. It allows you to easily mold your hair, although it probably works better for tidy hair style.

- Use hairspray combined with hairdryer. This is hard to do but you get the best results and its worth learning how to do it properly. It works great specially if you have a slightly longer hair, since you can achieve a great variety of results. It takes a TON of time though. Have you ever complained how women spend so many time in the bathroom before going out? Chances are most of that time is spent with the hairdryer.

What wax do you use? I tried wax once and my hair looked really strawy and gave it a somewhat scruffy look.. From what i can tell from your pics your hair's pretty similar to mine. How do you give it that somewhat wet but not gluey look?

I use either Loreal or Fructis. They both have a solid appearance as opposed to some that are liquid or look like gel.

Basically you put a little bit on your hands and rub them until it soften and spreads to your fingers. Then you use your fingers to make your hair have the style and appearance you want. The fact that you don't use a comb is what provides that fuzzy style (of course you'll need some practice if you've never done it before).
