After saying hello.. what next?

Where is a good place to start a conversation when approaching a woman unsolicited in public and after saying something like: "Hi, my names is XXXX, and I wanted to meet you." (as you recommend)?

In these situations in the past I have usually tried to strike up conversations with women with a comment or question relevant to the context, for example a complement about their clothes, accessories, drink/food or their option on something I am considering buying. But, I usually skip the introduction and often can't come up with something good to say so I often don't engage.

I get the point that the conversation doesn't need to be overly clever as the body language, voice tone, clear communication, etc is more important than the content. But, I often don't engage because I don't know what to say after "Hi...".

During the day i would er on the side of mundane personally. It's very different to approaching in a bar.
