A best book on how to design a website
Basically I am looking for a book on website design that explains things in non-nerdy terms. Anyone got suggestions?

Stick with the Head First series if you can when it comes to technical computer books.

Read Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML for the basics, and follow that up with Head First HTML5 Programming (i.e. a Javascript book).

I'd post links but the last time I tried that I got banned from the forum by a bot.

Dude, just go google Wordpress and get on it. It's way simpler now than it used to be. There are certainly things to learn about what you need for content and stuff but when it comes to putting these things together it's easy peasy after a week or two of messing around.

For WP updates and news check out http://www.jonbishop.com/2012/03/keeping...wordpress/

Scratch what I said and do what Zac said. You can learn all the CSS and HTML tags you want afterwards but you don't need them to get something up and running.

I don't know CSS and HTML and I made my blog and a bunch of others. It definitely helps and you should learn it eventually but just learn WP and you are a website maker =P

I'm confused!
Are you looking for web programming advice, like the comments above?
Or the actual design like the aesthetics and usuability??

The fact that he doesn't distinguish between that and also asks for books that don't deal in technical terms to heavily likely means he just wants to know how he can make his own website, so a CMS like WordPress is ideal.

RE: A best book on how to design a website
But aesthetics and usability are important, probably more important than the code, because WP will do fine for code, but there are lots of crappy websites out there by people who know all kinds of html/javascript/css/perl/whev. (Or, god, FLASH. ANYTHING BUT THE FLASH.)

So I'd actually want to insist on recommending a general design book. I'm not sure where to start with one, however -- most of my own design knowledge, such as it is, came through photography, so whenever I put together a website I end up incorporating lots of whacky visual arts proportions and such... but ymmv.

Jep, if you want a simple website (like a blog) or simple content Wordpress is the best option. For more elaborated websites you can have a look at Drupal, Joomla which provide a lot of different plugins and options (although they're also more complex). I like Drupal...

You can even use wordpress to host static content (like pages only, no posts.) And you don't even need to deal with hosting, ftp and such things if you buy the service from wordpress.com (having your custom domain under wp.com is pretty affordable) or some other service provider. See their conditions before signing up, depending on what you are looking for (webcommerce?) and what type of content (adult, commercial?) you may have to shop for other solutions.
Look for website builders, for a monthly fee they allow you to set your pages right away without having to learn any code. I don't think this list is exhaustive by any means but it's a start: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Website_builder

Set it up with Wordpress. You can get sick themes from WooThemes.com and Wpzoom.com.
